The assessment for PE7039 is based on a 4,000-words individual report focusing on a case of digital entrepreneurship selected by the student. The purpose of the assessment is to analyse the chosen case.

The analysis of the case study must be structured as follows.

  • Nature of the digital startups – approx. 600 words

Using adequate frameworks from the literature, introduce the selected case of digital entrepreneurship, providing an overview on the nature of the digital venture, the underlying technologies and the founding team.

  • Identification of the entrepreneurial opportunity – approx. 800 words

Using adequate concepts and frameworks from the literature, explain how the founding team recognized, created or discovered the entrepreneurial opportunity underlying the selected case of digital entrepreneurship. This section should reflect on both personal and contextual factors affecting the identification of entrepreneurial opportunities up, such as the skills, personal traits and aptitudes of the digital entrepreneurs; the role played by the institutional and socio-economic context; the influence of technological trends.

  • Development of the entrepreneurial idea (Start-up phase) – approx. 1,000 words

Using adequate concepts and frameworks from the literature, explain how the founding team acted upon their entrepreneurial idea to develop it into a digital start-up. This section should provide a detailed analysis of the following aspects:

  • The value proposition of the selected case of digital entrepreneurship during its start-up phase,
  • The business model of the selected case of digital entrepreneurship during its start-up phase,
  • The funding strategy adopted by the selected case of digital entrepreneurship during its start-up phase.
  • Development of the entrepreneurial idea (Scale-up phase) – approx. 1,000 words

Using adequate concepts and frameworks from the literature, explain how the founding team supported the scale-up and growth of their digital venture. This section should provide a detailed analysis of the following aspects:

  • Any changes in the value proposition and business model of the selected case of digital entrepreneurship between its start-up and scale-up phases,
  • The funding strategy adopted by the selected case of digital entrepreneurship to support its scale-up and growth,
  • The strategies put in place to deal with competitive challenges,
  • The strategies put in place to deal with regulatory challenges,
  • The strategies put in place to support the growth of the company (for example, internationalization strategies, mergers and acquisitions, etc.).
  • Recommendations for digital entrepreneurs – approx. 600 words

This section should outline five recommendations for the founders/leaders of the selected case of digital entrepreneurship. These recommendations should be supported by relevant references and include specific actions that are likely to improve the performance of the selected case by, for example, identifying:

  • Alternative funding strategies to better support the scale-up of the company,
  • Changes in the business model that could enhance the creation and capture of value,
  • Alternative strategies to win the competition of direct and indirect competitors,
  • Alternative strategies to minimize the impact of regulation,
  • Alternative strategies to support the internationalization and innovation capabilities of the company.

Information on the selected case should be retrieved from a variety of sources, including specialist databases (e.g. Crunchbase, FAME), corporate information (the company’s financial reports) and the trade press (e.g. the Financial Times, the Register).

The analysis should also be supported by and linked to relevant literature, including (but not limited to) the references cited in the module learning materials and reported in the reading lists.
