SUMS UG Coursework Specification Form 2025-26

Task Description:

Taking on the role of a strategic corporate social responsibility (CSR) consultant, you are to prepare a report focusing on ONE of the four case study organisations: (1) Enterprise Mobility; (2) Gripple; (3) Loro Crisps; and (4) The Green Estate.

You may select the same or a different organisation from that which was the focus of your group presentation work. Each of these organisations faces CSR and stakeholder relationship related issue(s) that have implications for their competitive positions, strategic objectives, and organisational purpose, but also wider society and the environment.

Information on the organisations and their CSR and stakeholder relationship issue(s) can be found on Blackboard and will be introduced in Lecture one. You will first undertake an analysis of the situation, introducing the organisation, considering its broader CSR context, and the internal, external, identity and stakeholder related aspects of its CSR and stakeholder relationships issue(s).

You will then perform a competitor analysis teasing out key learnings for your organisation. Finally, you will propose a strategic plan for your chosen organisation to address its CSR and stakeholder relationship issue(s).

Further guidance on each of these components is provided below.

Analysis of the situation (1000 words +/-) Deploying CSR and stakeholder relationship theory, frameworks and tools you will analyse the situation for your chosen organisation. Your analysis will include the following:

▪ Introduce the organisation and identify and analyse the CSR and stakeholder relationship issue(s) it is facing – you will identify and consider relevant internal (e.g., resource and capability), external (e.g., regulation, markets, competitors, customers), and identity (e.g., mission, values and purpose) related dimensions. o You will identify two Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) you think are especially relevant for your chosen organisation and in relation to the CSR and stakeholder relationship issue(s) – you will explain your choices.

▪ Critically discuss the CSR context for your organisation and what its social responsibilities are, you will engage with relevant debates e.g., shareholder versus stakeholder views of the firm, principles and standards e.g., United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, and theories e.g., the Pyramid of CSR.

▪ Perform a stakeholder analysis to identify key stakeholders for the chosen organisation and in relation to the CSR and stakeholder relationship issue(s), discuss the following: o Who are the most important stakeholders for the organisation in relation to the CSR and stakeholder relationship issue(s), and why?

o How are key stakeholders behaving, what is driving their behaviours, and what are the implications of these behaviours for the organisation and issue(s)?

o Where, if at all, do stakeholder interests and expectations align or conflict? What are the implications of this for the organisation and the issue(s)?

In your analysis of the situation you are expected to apply AT LEAST ONE general CSR framework or tool – for instance the Pyramid of CSR (Carroll, 1991), Creating Shared Value (Porter and Kramer, 2011), CSR stages and learning model (Zadek, 2004), and AT LEAST ONE stakeholder mapping and engagement framework or tool – for instance the Power/ Interest Matrix (Newcombe, 2003) the Stakeholder Identification and Salience framework (Mitchell et al, 1997), RELATE (Money et al, 2012).

  1. Competitor analysis (750 words +/-)

You will identify ONE other organisation and perform a competitor analysis in relation to the CSR and stakeholder relationship issue(s). This organisation could be in the same or a different sector to your case study, and it might be of a similar or different size. You will address the following:

▪ Introduce the organisation identifying relevant internal, external, identity and stakeholder related aspects and comparing these to your chosen case study organisation.

▪ You will explain and justify why it is a useful organisation for analysis.

▪ Identify THREE key learnings from your competitor analysis for your organisation and its efforts to address the CSR and stakeholder relationship issue(s).

  1. CSR Strategy (750 words +/-)

▪ How the new CSR strategy or strategy development relates to the organisation’s wider strategy, objectives and purpose. You will propose a new or the development of existing CSR strategy in your organisation responding to its CSR and stakeholder relationship issue(s). In your discussion you will address the following:

▪ Identify key initiatives or activities to be undertaken

▪ You will consider the resources and capabilities required and whether the organisation currently possesses them and/or how they could be acquired if needed.

▪ You will explain how the new or development in CSR strategy proposed responds to the client brief and addresses the CSR and stakeholder relationship issue(s) revealed through your analysis of the situation

▪ You will consider the role of different stakeholders in the new or development of CSR strategy and how it will drive desirable stakeholder behaviours

▪ The implications of your new or development in CSR strategy for the two identified SDGs and the organisation’s impacts on them (positive or negative).

▪ Any downsides, trade-offs or dilemmas associated with the recommended new or developed CSR strategy.

In proposing a new or the development of an existing CSR strategy, you should draw upon CSR strategy literature frameworks and tools e.g., Porter and Kramer’s (2011) ‘Creating Shared Value’, the Seven-step model of Husted and Allen (2011), the work of Galbreath (2008, 2011), Haski-Levanthal’s (2021) writing on strategic CSR. Reports should engage with relevant CSR and stakeholder relationship theory, frameworks and tools, and be supported with evidence. You should use a combination of academic literature and (credible) practitioner sources to support your work, including but not limited to the material provided in the ‘Case study organisations’ folder on Blackboard. This information is there to introduce the organisations and their CSR and stakeholder relationship issue(s) but should be supplemented with your own research.

Once a week you will also be able to ask questions to your chosen organisation through the module leader [Dr David Littlewood].
