Summative Assessment
There are two elements:
- Presentation (1000 words equivalent) (30%)
- 3000 word assignment (70%)
- Presentation Assignment (30%)
Using PowerPoint, produce a screencast video presentation focussing on your own education.
The formative assessment will have helped with starting to prepare for this assignment. Consider your own school experience, both the positive and negative aspects and reflect upon what you were taught and the way in which you were taught. For example, you could consider type of school, curriculum content, teaching methods, classroom size and organisation, behaviour management and class rules. You could also consider some of the topics already taught. What do these experiences reveal about the teachers’ priorities and/or the educational policy of the time? You do need to include references and you do need to demonstrate critical reflection. You will be shown how to create a screencast video.
Presentation Assignment Submission
This assignment must be submitted online via Turnitin on Blackboard before 12:00 Midday on 21st January 2025. Please feel free to submit early if you wish. You will be able to view your marks and feedback via the Blackboard grade centre from 11th February 2025.
- Essay Assignment
Include a statement at the front page of your assignment to acknowledge your use of GenAI tools within the assessment itself. This statement should be written in complete sentences and include the following information:
- Name and version of the GenAI tool used; e.g. ChatGPT-3.5
- URL of the AI tool (if applicable)
- Brief description (single sentence) of the way in which the GenAI tool was used
- Confirmation that the work is your own.
Do not include your name. The misuse of Generative AI tools, including the failure to appropriately acknowledge the use of such tools, is considered Academic Misconduct.
Title: Issues in education and the role of artificial intelligence (3000 word reflective assignment).
Preparation
- Create one Word document for your assignment, made up of three sections, A, B and C.
- Ask a Generative AI tool (e.g. MS Copilot, ChatGPT) to “prioritise the issues in education today”. You must use this wording. Include the list generated in the appendix to your assignment (i.e. after the final reference list): it does not contribute to your overall word count.
Assignment
- A) Write a reflective, discursive assignment on the one issue which you think should be at the top of the list. It does not have to be an issue which the AI tool has thought of. The assignment needs to have these sections:
- Introduction. (200 words approx.) Articulate what you think the issue is in your own words. Summarise your argument overall, setting out the steps the assignment will take.
- The key issue. (1500 words approx.) You can divide this long section into sub-sections with sub-headings. You need to:
- a) Use the first person (i.e. ‘I’). To be reflective, you are encouraged to use phrases such as ‘I wonder if…’ ‘I think’, ‘ It seems to me that…’, ‘Although I used to think [x], nowadays I think [y]’. It is important to give reasons for your views (i.e. make sure ‘because’ occurs frequently).
- b) Start a new paragraph when you move on to a new point or idea (i.e. don’t start a new one randomly).
- c) Relate the argument to your own experience of teaching and learning, where possible.
- d) Relate your argument to practices and issues concerning education in your home country (if relevant)
- e) Cite relevant sources from the module reading list and elsewhere if necessary.
- f) Summarise ideas and standpoints outlined in the sources read (e.g. ‘Smith (2020) argues that…’) to justify your prioritisation.
- Conclusion. (300 words approx.) This draws the threads of your argument together and identifies the implications and importance of this issue to the broader social, cultural and/or ecological context. No references should be included here.
- B) Reflection on AI. (500 words approx.).
- You must address all three of these questions:
o Did you agree with the ranking of the issues on the generated list? Explain your decision and justify your choice of topic.
o What does the list get right overall and in what way is it insufficient?
o How did you use technology such as search engines, online writing tools and generative AI to help produce this writing? Be specific about applications and your use of them.
- You need to address one or more of these questions:
o The AI list identifies issues separately but are there connections between them? If so, explain these connections.
o Are there concepts and ideas (addressed in the module) not mentioned in the AI summary which could help make it more analytical? If so, what are they and how are they relevant?
o What are the implications of AI for originality?
o How might/should AI change educational systems in the future?
- Follow the requirements a-f above.
- C) Reflection on your learning (500 words)
Consider the impact of the Values and Practices module on your thinking about education overall. You need to write in the first person and include at least two references. You must address both of these questions :
o What have your learned through preparing this final assignment about the process of studying and learning?
o How has the module influenced your thinking about education in general? You need to address one or more of these questions:
o Which sessions made you reflect the most on your own ideas about education?
o Which book or paper has left an impression on your mind and why?
o What other issues and topics in education could be included in this module and why?
o How might your learning through this module influence your choice of/approach to your dissertation topic?
Remember this is a reflection on your learning, not a module evaluation (you have a separate opportunity for this)
References. Include ONE reference list for the whole assignment at the end. Use the APA referencing style.
Appendix. Include your AI-generated list here.
Make sure the whole assignment, including the appendix, is presented in one consistent font style (i.e. Time New Roman) and size (i.e. 12 point) and lines are spaced (i.e. at least 1.5 lines).
