This assessment will encourage the students to apply the leadership and change knowledge and skills from the module and will be submitted in the form of an essay.

Assignment task/s to be completed

The submission of a written essay that discusses two (2) leadership and two (2) change management theories, strategies and techniques and the impact of leadership approaches in managing and leading a change on followers, organisations and performance using a wide variety of research materials from the core reading list (4,000 words-10% – +10%).

This task will require you to include all the following:

  1. Review two (2) leadership and two (2) change management theories.
  2. Evaluate the impact of leadership theories, styles, and approaches in managing and leading change on:
  3. a) Followers
  4. b) Organisations
  5. c) Performance
  6. Concluding section.

Your essay needs to include the following:

  1. Introductory paragraph (500 Words)-use one citation to define leadership and another to define change, outline the aim of the essay and outline what the rest of the essay will cover.
  2. The main body paragraphs (3000 Words): The main body of your essay should consist of several sections, totaling around 3000 words. These sections will be divided as follows:
  3. a) Identification and Review of Leadership Theories
  • Identification of Leadership Theories: You need to identify and briefly mention a range (not more than 4)of leadership theories. You don’t need to go into depth about these four, just identify and briefly describe them.
  • Review of Two Additional Leadership Theories: After identifying the four leadership theories, you must then select two leadership theories (from the four identified above)for a more detailed review. The review should be based on research, potentially from a core reading list. This review will involve discussing the key concepts, strengths, weaknesses, and practical applications of these two theories.
  1. b) Identification and Review of Change Management Theories
  • Identification of Change Management Theories: Similar to the leadership theories section, identify and briefly describe a range (not more than 4)of change management theories.
  • Review of Two Additional Change Management Theories: Again, select two change management theories (from the four identified above)for a detailed review. This review should be based on research, analysing the key aspects, benefits, challenges, and how these theories are applied in real-world scenarios.
  1. c) Analysis of a Leader in the Tourism Industry
  • Identification of a Leader: Choose a leader from the Tourism Industry, which could include sectors like Hospitality, Recreation and Entertainment, or Transportation. This leader could be a well-known CEO, manager, or influential figure within the industry.
  • Impact of Leadership Theories on the Leader’s Style: Discuss how the leadership theories (possibly including those identified or reviewed earlier) have influenced this leader’s style. Highlight both the positive and negative impacts of these theories on the leader’s approach to leadership. d) Evaluation of the Leader’s Impact on Change Management (positive and negative)
  • Followers: Assess how the leader’s style and approach to change management have affected their followers or subordinates.
  • Organisations: Evaluate the impact of the leader’s style and change management strategies on the organization they lead.
  • Performance: Analyse how the leader’s approach has impacted performance.
  1. Conclusion and recommendations (500 Words)-This paragraph needs to summarise the topic of the essay and make recommendations based on what you found in sections 2(c) and (d) above. Do not introduce new ideas into this section, only summarise and evaluate.
