Question (50 marks)

Read the fictitious scenario below and answer the question that follows:

Simphiwe had just embarked on her new role as a junior associate at Cool Attorneys and Associates, a prestigious law firm in Sandton. She was thrilled about collaborating with a diverse team of legal professionals from various cultural backgrounds. However, as she delved into her tasks, she noticed that navigating cultural differences posed communication challenges within the workplace.

During a strategy meeting one afternoon, Simphiwe observed that her colleague from Angola, Daniel, seemed reserved and hesitant to contribute, despite Simphiwe recognising his expertise. After the meeting, Simphiwe took the initiative to approach Daniel privately and inquire about his thoughts on the discussed legal strategies. Daniel explained that in his culture, it’s customary to refrain from speaking unless explicitly invited to do so, something which Simphiwe was unaware of. Simphiwe realised the significance of understanding and respecting different cultural nuances.

Simphiwe vowed to Daniel to foster a more inclusive and culturally sensitive environment for communication, to allow the team to grow closer and collaborate more to enhance the firm’seffectiveness in delivering legal services.

Required:

With the above scenario in mind, write an essay in which you address the following components:

  • An introduction defining and explaining the concept of intercultural communication in the workplace.
  • Set out the importance of intercultural communication within a law firm and highlight the benefits of intercultural communication in this regard.
  • Discuss specific strategies that Simphiwe could consider implementing in order to achieve the goal of fostering a more inclusive and culturally sensitive environment.
  • A conclusion.
