ASSESSMENT BRIEF

The Assessment

Create a 3000-word annotated bibliography on the following topic:

Consider the following statement: “The journey toward sustainable development is being threatened by climate change. We urgently need to develop systems to help us anticipate risk, cope with the effects of a crisis (climate change) and enable us navigate our way back to the path we were once on.”

Critically evaluate these ideas. Compare and contrast the literature on your chosen topic and present evidence on the debates.

  1. You should draw together a collection of texts on your chosen topic.
  2. You must annotate the texts with a commentary which

(i) indicates the content or scope of the text

(ii) who the texts were written for

(iii) outlines their main arguments and conclusions

(iv) identifies research methods used

(v) states strengths and limitations of the texts

(vi) discusses the relevance of the text for your assignment

(vii) your own reflections of how you will use the texts (whether essential or supplementary).

  1. Only references which support the annotated bibliography should be included.
  2. Please note that the annotations should not simply reproduce material from journal abstracts, rather, they should demonstrate your understanding of what the main arguments that journal paper puts forward, explained critically, and in your own language.
  3. The following are acceptable sources to be included in your list: journal articles, working papers, book chapters or books, newspaper articles. Most of your cited references should be from academic outputs such as books or journal articles/working papers, but a limited number of newspaper articles will also be acceptable. Please do not include any blogs or video sources.
  4. A practical example found online, with samples of different types of texts and lists can be found below. You can this as a form of guidance, but you do not necessarily have to stick to a predetermined length at all times. You should devote roughly half of the paragraph for each reference to (i) to (iv) under point 2 above and the other half to (v) to (vii); which are the areas that show your critical engagement and elaboration.
