This assignment requires you to read the following academic article: Schyns, B. and Schilling, J. (2013) ‘How bad are the effects of bad leaders? A meta-analysis of destructive leadership and its outcomes’. The Leadership Quarterly 24(1), 138-158.

Based on your close reading of the above-mentioned article and the contents of the International Leadership and Management module, outline what you see as the main issues and factors that shapes or affect leadership. To ensure depth of analysis, use Leadership theories and models to explain your view. Pay attention to the interconnectedness amongst different theories/models instead of isolating them.

In addition, critically analyse insights and recommendations would you offer to leaders based on the article discussions.

Produce a concluding statement summarising your personal reflections on what you have learned about ‘international leadership’ from this module. Can you re-evaluate any of your past experiences in the light of what you know now? What will you take away, to apply in your career? Introduction

This assignment seeks to outline the main issues and factors that affect leadership as illustrated in the leadership quarterly journal, the article of “how bad are the effects of bad leaders? A meta-analysis of destructive leadership and its outcomes”. Furthermore, the essay will integrate leadership theories in exploring the issues. Additionally, this essay will critically analyse the different insights and recommendations that would be offered to leaders as highlighted by the article. Finally, the essay will offer a personal reflection on my personal learning experience on international leadership module.

Main issues and factors that affect leadership

There are numerous issues and factors that have been pinpointed in the article. To begin with, the issue of abusive supervision has been seen as an antecedent to negative subordinate workplace outcome and has negative impact on leadership. Accordingly, this sustained display of nonphysical type of hostility perpetrated by leaders affect followers negatively translating to poor work environment (Schyns & Schilling, 2013). Great man theory is against the issue of abusive supervision since great leaders are born and not made. According to Shafique and Loo-See (2018), Great man theory postulates that great leaders are born with necessary internal characteristics like charisma, intelligence and social skills and do not possess abusive traits. Secondly, another issue that is raised by the article is petty tyranny. As Schyns & Schilling (2013) explain, petty tyranny denotes the destructive type of authority that is exercised by leaders in an unfair and capricious style. Tyrannical management is a major issue in leadership as it causes low self-esteem, high frustration, work alienation and stress among subordinate thus impacting negatively on performance (Khan et al., 2017). Contingency theory stipulates that good leaders have the ability to assess the needs of their subordinates and adjust their behaviors accordingly (Mango, 2018).
