Essay questions

Choose one of the three questions below on which to write your essay. You are required to choose one of the following topics on which to focus your answer.

Childhood, Class, Gender, Sexuality, Ethnicity, Aboriginality

Please note that your essay must not draw on the topic on which you did your teaching seminar presentation. Essays will be cross-checked to ensure different topics to those undertaken in the teaching seminar are chosen. Failure to comply with this instruction will result in a mark of 0 for that essay.

Question 1

Using one of the topics above, discuss the following statement. “For schools to operate for the benefit of all, they need to be socially just”. What does this quote mean? Based on one of the topics above, explain how socially just practices, pedagogies and policies, may not always be present in schools. How might these injustices be theorised? How might schools develop a more equitable learning environment for all students?

Question 2

Based on one of the topics above, describe how this issue of equity manifests in school education in curriculum, pedagogy, policy and practice. In your response, you need to consider the implications for marginalized young people, with specific reference to your chosen topic, and their access to equal outcomes.

Using appropriate theoretical concepts explored in subject TEAC7023 (Cultures, Subjectivities and Schooling) explain how these concepts help to inform your understandings beyond mere description.

“School education should focus on reading, writing and arithmetic. Issues of equity are not significant as everyone has the same chances at success if they just try hard enough”. What does this statement mean and why is it problematic? Drawing on one of the topics listed above, how might this perspective contribute to inequities in the access and outcomes of marginalised students? Include in your explanation appropriate theoretical concepts that help us to understand these inequities. What do teachers and schools need to do to promote greater equity in this area?
