Solution
Personal analysis of skills that an event planner should possess
In our group discussion assignment 2, we identified that the most important skills that an event planner must possess are communication, problem solving and empowerment skills. My position is that communication and problem solving skills are very crucial for an event planner. However, I feel that, although empowerment skills are not necessary for an event planner and instead more focus should be on organizational skills.
According to Barbato (2011) communication skills are one of the most important skills that every employee must have as it involves the ability to express oneself clearly both orally and in writing, becoming a good listener as well as a negotiator. The cognitive dissonance theory in communication shows people tend to avoid communicating with persons who usually have different views and opinions from their own (Easterby-Smith & Lyles, 2011). According to this theory, this affects the communication as people become skewed to communicating with likeminded people and sometimes get offended while people are not in agreement with their opinions. As an event planner communication skills should assist a person to be accommodative and respectful of different views (Marquardt, 2011). On the other hand, the communication accommodation theory, explains that in the process of communication, people adjust their communication skills to please and suit the receiver. According to Covey (2004) successful communication, requires the mastery of various competencies and knowledge. First, communication requires a person to be aware of the linguistic and grammatical rules which enable them construct words and sentences that are meaningful (Marquardt, 2011). This competence is studied in language classes. In addition, communicators must understand how to use and interpret both verbal and non verbal expressions in socially appropriate ways (Whetton, & Cameron, 2003). The third competence involves the ability to generate messages in ways that will communicate their goals……………………………………………..
